SPF’s Heavy Hitters: Avobenzone, Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, and SHIELDrf (a Rodan + Fields® exclusive)
While everyone needs broad spectrum coverage from head to toe, when it comes to which sunscreen to choose, one size doesn’t fit all.
- If skin is sensitive or acne-prone, look for products that contain physical sunscreens such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These mineral-based ingredients are effective at blocking aging UVA and UVB rays, but won’t exacerbate acne or sensitive skin. They’re also great for kids’ tender skin and children and adults that experience a stinging sensation with chemical-based products.
- If you don’t have sensitive skin or acne, avobenzone is our UVA and UVB blocker of choice; however, avobenzone alone can be unstable in formulations and degrade quickly when exposed to sunlight. To maximize its effectiveness, Rodan + Fields SHIELDrf technology uses free radical-fighting colorless carotenoids to stabilize avobenzone, making it more effective at providing protection when exposed to sunlight.
Find Avobenzone and SHIELDrf sunscreen technology in Rodan + Fields ANTI-AGE TripleDefense Treatment SPF 30, REVERSE Broad Spectrum SF 50+ Sunscreen, ANTI-AGE Age Shield Hand Balm SPF 30, and ESSENTIALS Lip Shield SPF 25. Find zinc oxide and titanium dioxide in Rodan + Fields SOOTHE Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30, UNBLEMISH Oil Control Lotion SPF 20, and ENHANCEMENTS Mineral Peptides SPF 20.

Sun Damaged Skin looks and feels like this:
Sun damaged skin often exhibits dark spots and uneven pigmentation. The texture of the skin may feel rough in some areas and smooth in others. The skin may look sallow, devitalized and lack a certain glow that one once had.
Sun damage also increases the signs of aging which may include more noticeable fine lines, wrinkles, dark circles, broken blood vessels (telagentasia), and skin sensitivity.
All of those signs really aren’t attractive, nor do they help you to look your best.
Tips for Sun Damaged Skin
Prevention is the key. Sun damage is often one of the first signs of aging noticed by men and women. Not only is it important to prevent sun damage from happening in the first place, it is also critically important that one begins to take care of their skin as soon as sun damage becomes apparent.
Hats, sunscreen (UVA and UVB protection), long sleeves, umbrellas, sunglasses are just a few ways to protect yourself. You will be glad you did!
What To Do About Those Sunspots
For getting your glow back on I recommend the REVERSE Regimen by Rodan+Fields Dermatologists. Real results at a fraction of the cost of a doctors visit!
Why wait? You deserve to look your best!

Hydroquinone is one of the most misunderstood ingredients in skincare. This organic compound, found in blueberries, cranberries and other fruits and vegetables, is the only FDA-approved way to lighten skin discolorations.
And while it is available over-the-counter or with a prescription from your doctor, don’t book an appointment with your dermatologist just yet. The 4% by-prescription-only variety can be more irritating than the two percent found in OTC products, without guaranteeing better results. We find that 2% hydroquinone works extremely well when combined with exfoliation and sun protection.
Find 2% hydroquinone in Rodan + Fields REVERSE Skin Lightening Toner and REVERSESkin Lightening Treatment.

Melasma is a dark skin discoloration that appears on sun-exposed areas of the face. It is often associated with the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. It is especially common in pregnant women, women who are taking birth control pills (oral contraceptives) and women taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) during menopause. Melasma doesn’t cause any other symptoms besides skin discoloration but may be of great cosmetic concern.
The Reverse Regimen exfoliates, lightens, brightens and protects your skin for a more even tone and texture. Recognized on Allure Magazine’s A List.
