Manning Up To Skincare

InsideLook_090215_DermRF_v1

Ever get the sense that today’s men are more forthright than ever about swapping skincare tips and manicure hotspots? You’re not imagining it. From “manscaping” to “manscara,” research shows that men are increasingly taking cues from women in the grooming department as they become more invested (and invest more money!) in their overall appearance.

Marketing company JWT Intelligence recently surveyed 1,000 men in the U.S. and U.K. and found that many are shedding old stereotypes about gender roles and expectations.

So just how far will men go to stay competitive in the looks department? Much depends on a man’s age. Millennials are definitely taking the lead in terms of image-conscious self-styling, with more young men embracing the must-have “man bag” and “man bun.” And according to the JWT study, 22 percent of the 18 – 34 generation think eyebrow waxing is perfectly acceptable for a man to use versus a mere 4 percent among Baby Boomers.

Men are also becoming more receptive to new skincare habits that can improve their appearance. JWT reports that, according to the most recent data, U.S. men underwent 1.25 million cosmetic procedures, reflecting a 5% year-over‐year increase. For skincare, while a quarter of men still prefer to skip out altogether, there are 54 percent that use moisturizer, eye cream and other skincare products.

Clearing a Path To Blemish Free Skin

R+F Consultant Jasmine Trotter shares highlights on her journey to clear, healthy skin.

DermRF-RealityCheck-081915_dermrf1

For acne sufferers facing clogged pores, inflammation and pigmentation, the reality of clear skin often seems out of reach—so discovering a solution can feel life-changing.

Rodan + Fields® Consultant Jasmine Trotter understands firsthand the ups and downs of acne treatments: “Before trying UNBLEMISH Regimen, I had given up on my skincare because every product I used just further irritated my acne. They either made my face too oily or too dry, and none of them cleared up my acne.”

In the weeks leading up to her college graduation, she was introduced to Rodan + Fields products by her cousin. As Jasmine prepared for a big transition in her academic life, she realized it was time to take control of her blemishes. “I was ready to enter into the world with my new degree and clear skin.”

Jasmine noticed a big difference after using UNBLEMISH Regimen for only a month. With regular use of the products, she no longer experiences severe breakouts. “People don’t even remember that I used to suffer from acne because my skin is so flawless now,” she says.

With these positive results, she’s also happy to continue her makeup-free routine. “I’ve always been a person who likes to wear just my natural skin. Because of Rodan + Fields, I will never have to cover it up because my skin is already beautiful.” For Jasmine, the benefits to having a clear complexion even go beyond appearances: “Having flawless skin is the best feeling to have because when you look good, you do good.”

Do You Know The Difference Between Pharma Grade and Cosmetic Grade Skincare?

company1FUN FACTS:

Did you know?…Rodan+Fields is a PHARMACEUTICAL GRADE skincare company!

PHARMACEUTICAL GRADE: The FDA requires that products be 99.9% pure ingredients. Products must contain 0.1%, or less, of bacteria. Only 5% of the skin care industry is under the regulation established by the FDA and considered pharmaceutical grade skin care products.

COSMETIC GRADE: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allows cosmetic grade products to contain up to 30% BACTERIA. This means that ingredients may only be 70% pure. It is a large breeding ground for bacteria, which can lead to contact dermatitis, an itchy red rash. 95% OF THE SKINCARE INDUSTRY IS COSMETIC QUALITY & UN-REGULATED BY THE FDA!!

Fact Or Fiction? Sun Damage Only Occurs When Skin Is Exposed To UV Radiation

FactFiction_071515_DermRFfire flyFiction:  While the source of sun damage is UV radiation, the actual damage occurs for several hours following exposure. So just because you stepped out of the sun’s rays, doesn’t mean you’re in the clear when it comes to protecting your skin.

A 2015 study at Yale University found that sunlight continues to damage people’s skin and increase the risk of cancer for four hours after they leave the beach and head indoors. The Yale team showed in the journal Science that the melanin in our skin absorbs the UV radiation and then sets off a series of chemical reactions, which release the energy—similar to what happens with fireflies when they produce light and glow with their energy.photo_woman_applying_sunscreen

The result is ongoing damage to the skin’s DNA for over four hours after the UV exposure. “Half or more of this kind of DNA damage is not happening on the beach,” says the lead researcher, “It’s in the car on the way home.”

Even though sun exposure may be inevitable some days, arm yourself against the harmful UV radiation by applying a broad spectrum sunscreen throughout the day, wearing protective clothing and avoiding peak UV exposure hours.

The Risks Of Sleeping In Your Makeup Run More Than Skin Deep

eye clothsEver find yourself tempted to skip your nightly skincare routine and fast-forward to dreamland? You’re not alone. A UK survey, as reported in the Daily Mail, found that a third of women go to sleep at least twice a week without cleansing their face, and 75 percent of readers in New Beauty admitted they’ve done this too. But sleeping in your makeup can lead to some not-so-pretty consequences for your skin, inside and out.

When a Daily Mail reporter decided to see what would happen if she abstained from cleansing her face at night over a 30-day period, her skin became extremely dry and sensitive, her eyelashes fell out in clumps and her pores grew by 5 percent. She also developed “eyelash dandruff.” The reporter noted that wrinkles on the sides of her face had grown worse, possibly due to her drying talc-based makeup.

Skipping your pre-bedtime face wash may not only cause you to look older, it could lead to problems that run more than skin deep. According to a study published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology in June 2015, heavy metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium found in cosmetic products may act directly on the skin or be absorbed through the skin into the blood, where they can accumulate in the body and exert toxic effects in various organs.

Why risk it? Help your skin stay healthy and get the most out of your ‘beauty rest’ by washing your face before you snooze. For best results, use a cleanser designed to address your unique skin concerns—wrinkles, acne, redness or discoloration. In a pinch, remove makeup with REDEFINE Eye Cloths, which deposit anti-aging peptides to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and puffiness.
